These are pictures of the Ruddy Darter Dragonfly.
The Ruddy Darter Dragonfly is a European species of the family Libellulidae. These insects have wingspans of up to 6cm and fly in a slightly erratic floating manner. It is also known as the Devils Darning Needle because of it's shape.
These photos were taken in some woodland area in Dumfries, Scotland where the Dragonfly was resting on a wooden beam. The Ruddy Darter Dragonfly is very eyecatching and not difficult to miss, not only for its erratic flying motion, but also because of its spectacular looking red colouring.
